Modernising an old-school work process

Today sports and events commentators still rely on paper-based information such as printed documents, and pen and paper note-taking. Paper-based causes several issues for the fast-paced world of commentating; poor organisation, inaccessibility, slow retrieval of relevant information, weather-proofing and so on.

An experienced, top-tier football commentator wanted to modernise this process using real time-data available data to equip commentators with a digital toolkit for preparing, organising, and accessing facts and figures on their upcoming sporting events.

The initial scope was football but with the aim of expanding to other sports and events

During planning and development I drew on the the clients expert knowledge, a former international footballer and current top level football commentator, to provide insight into app requirements and to connect me to a community of sports commentators for front-line feedback.

The result - an app that supports commentators pre-game and live. Instead of combing through numerous websites and collating fractured data, the app, using existing APIs provides a central point for in-depth information and statistics about players, teams, and fixtures within a user-friendly interface that allows for such use-cases as comparing players’ goalscoring records, teams’ home and away forms and much more.

Commentators are also given the ability to quickly capture notes via speech-to-text for match-day. And with live in-match commentary they are provided with relevant match, team and player data and can record and input match events as they happen in a live timeline.

From creating low fidelity wireframes, to a high fidelity prototype, I worked with the client to refine and hone down the application to show critical information in the right locations at the right times.

Fixtures

Commentators are able to view upcoming fixtures and save their matches of interest. Viewing up to date stats of results, tables and player stats.

Pregame

In preparation for games, commentators can set the on field players, substitutes and formation. They can also view stats on both teams and how they compare.

Live game

During a live game, commentators can quickly access player information for use on air, add events which occur during the match and swap out substitutes.

Live game: Quick notes

Commentators can also add quick notes, either by typing or using voice notes, automatically converting voice into text notes.
